So many models to mention - we still have more to add so keep coming back to see what's new.
The diversity of models and changes within Hillman, Commer and Karrier was vast. I hope that others will add to the history in this section. I'll make a start in the 's part way through the history of such a varied range of vehicles, - Pictured below is my 58' model Series III Minx.
In the mid's Rootes decided to release a new version of the Minx to follow the popular and successful Mark Minx. It was to have the same cc engine as the current Mark VIII, with minor improvements, but updated steering and suspension, and a completely restyled body, the object being to create more space for the passengers inside.
During development this new body style was known as 'Audax' - latin for 'bold' - and the new design, a radical departure from the Mark VIII, was certainly striking.
The designer, Raymond Loewy, had previously worked not only for Rootes, but also for Studebaker, amongst others, having been responsible for the Starlight Coupe. This time it was the wrap-around glass of the backlight and the matching reverse slope of the rear side glass.
Length was emphasised by hooded bezels on headlights and bumpers which kicked out at the body corners, in contrast to the rounded shapes of the previous Minx. The side body panels had a crease line with a distinctive curve at the front, and on the Saloon Deluxe there was also a cheaper Special saloon dual colour schemes were popular, the upper being usually pearl grey.
Two-tone paint schemes, often associated with the Minx, were not new to Rootes. In fact, the Minx was not the first of the Rootes cars to use the Audax design.
That honour went to the more upmarket Sunbeam Rapier, first unveiled at the Motor Show. The Series I Minx, as it was designated, was launched in Maya little before the similarly-styled Singer Gazelle, announced in September ' The Series I Minx proved immediately popular with the motoring press and public alike.Google diagram template
The Motorin its issue of May 23rddescribes it thus:. No such criticism can be levelled against the new Hillman Minx, for its low build and attractive lines make it one of the most alluring medium-sized saloons ever built in this country.
As well as the De Luxe and Special saloons referred to above, a Convertible was produced, followed, in June by an Estate. Prices were as follows:. The 'De Luxe' was the 'standard' version of the car, while the 'Special' was a low-cost version with simpler body and interior trim.
The low price was set to attract the attention of fleet buyers. For a more sporty version of the convertible, a twin-carburettor conversion by Alexander Engineering of Haddenham, Bucks was available.
A Laycock-de Normanville electrically-operated overdrive was fitted to top and third gears. Otherwise, the Alexander conversion was similar to the standard convertible. The battery had to be moved to the boot to make way for the carburettors, but this was felt to aid weight distribution.
Externally, the very smart paintwork included a wide side-flash, not dissimilar to the Singer Gazelle or Sunbeam Rapier, and a small badge appeared on the wings immediately in front of the doors.
The acceleration data are quite remarkable. Here are a few examples, with the times of the standard saloon given in parentheses: 0 - 60mph, All these figures were obtained without using the overdrive, as the extra ratios come into their own primarily when cruising on the open road.
Outwardly, the Series II could be distinguished by a new style of radiator grille, raised bonnet badge, and chrome surrounds on the front and rear windscreens. The bumpers were set a little further out from the body. Changes elsewhere were restricted to minor modifications to the engine and steering gear. The reasons for persisting with the 'stripped-down' version of the Minx, the Special are adequately summed up by a review in The Motor, 30th October, As a comfortable four-seater, capable of nearly 80 m.
An interesting new feature of the Series II Minx was the 'Manumatic' system semi-automatic transmission option. This was not the fully automatic system used on later Series Minxes, as the standard 4-speed gearbox was used, and the clutch operated by pressing on the end of the gear stick. The system was not exclusive to Rootes, and other manufacturers such as BMC also used it. Shortly afterwards came the unique and lovely Series I Husky - half-saloon, half-estate car, resembling the Series II Minx from the front, but with a glazed, van-like rear.
The bumpers were different and the trim simpler, in the manner of the Minx special.The Hillman Super Minx is a family car which was produced by Hillman from to It was a slightly larger version of the Hillman Minxfrom the period when the long-running Minx nameplate was applied to the "Audax " series of designs. The Minx underwent many changes throughout its history, and the Super Minx name was not used during production of non-Audax Minx designs.
Announced in October  the Super Minx gave Rootesand particularly its Hillman marquean expanded presence in the upper reaches of the family car market. It has been suggested that the Super Minx design was originally intended to replace, and not merely to supplement, the standard Minx, but was found to be too big for that purpose.
Suspension was independent at the front using coil springs with anti-roll bar and at the rear had leaf springs and a live axle. The steering used a recirculating ball system and was as usual at the time not power assisted. Standard seating, trimmed in Vynide, used a bench type at the front with individual seats as an option.
A heater was fitted but a radio remained optional.
The car could be ordered in single colour or two tone paint. The four-speed manual transmission featured synchromesh on the top three ratios from the start  and had a floor lever: "Smiths Easidrive" automatic transmission was option. Inwith the launch of the Super Minx Mark III the Super Minx was facelifted, and the wrap-around rear window gave way to a new "six-light" design with a larger side windows aft of the rear side doors. The windscreen and side windows were also made taller and the roof-line flatter.
Like many other Rootes products including the Minx, the Super Minx was one of a badge-engineered series of models, sold under various marques. The Singer marque was represented by the Singer Vogue which had been announced in Julyfour months earlier than the Hillman Super Minx. The Sceptre was developed as a four-door replacement for the Sunbeam Rapierbut was re-designated as a Humber shortly before launch, while the two-door Rapier based on the 'Audax' Minx continued unreplaced until The cars differed in subtle ways, with the Singer being positioned slightly above the Hillman and gaining such extras as quad headlightsand the Humber topping the range, commensurate with Humber's traditional role as a producer of upmarket and luxury models.
The styling of the Sceptre as well as the Vogue somewhat recalled previous, larger Humbers. The Sceptre marks 1 and 1A had a slightly different grille arrangement and front trim to the Vogue as well as a taller panoramic windscreen, sloping rear roofline and larger rear fins. It had been intended that the Sceptre be a sports saloon until shortly before its launch as a Humber, hence its sprightly performance compared with other Humber models.
An overall fuel consumption of The twin Zenith carburettors had been hard to keep balanced. Other modifications included a water-jacketed inlet manifold, timing adjustments and stronger valve springs to eliminate valve bounce at high engine speeds. The lockout could be removed on first and second gears, and this was often done by Rootes in cars used for competitions such as rallying.
In addition, the Sceptre was from the beginning provided with servo-assisted braking control and, unusually ininch front disc-brakes. The Marks 1 and 1A were not available with an automatic option - although this was rectified with the Mark II cars, using a three-speed unit with automatic kick-down.
This was a cheaper option than was usual at the time due to the deletion of the Laycock De Normanville overdrive fitted to the Manual cars. There was a Singer variant of the smaller Minx as well the Singer Gazelle but no equivalent Humber version of the Minx, except for the Humber 80 version of the Minx released in New Zealand, as is Humber 90 to the Super Minx which would have been uncharacteristically small for the Humber marque; conversely there was a sporty Sunbeam version of the Minx the Sunbeam Rapier but no Sunbeam version of the Super Minx.
These never entered production, but at least one of the original cars survives. Singer Vogue after the facelift which saw the wrap around rear window replaced with a more modern "six-light" arrangement. Unlike the Hillman and Singer versions, the Sceptre retained the panoramic wrap-around rear window throughout its life.
